MV-L earns victory over Western Dubuque May 04, 2012 · Crystal Eskelsen
The Mount Vernon-Lisbon boys' soccer team earned their first WaMaC win of the young season last week, beating conference foe Western Dubuque, 4-2.
The Mustangs' first score and only score of the first half came off the outside of Robbie Blythe's foot.
Trailing 2-1 at the halftime break, Mount Vernon-Lisbon went to work in the second half, outplaying Western Dubuque at both ends of the field.
"We started the second half with a rocket shot into the top left corner by MVP Blake Heeren," said Peter Rodd, Mount Vernon-Lisbon head coach.
With the score tied 2-2, the Mustangs kept attacking the goal.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon's third goal came on a tap-in by Jacob Malik, giving the Mustangs the lead at 3-2.
Adding to their lead, Mustang Micah Russell got his foot solidly on the ball late in the game and kicked a hard ball past the Western Dubuque goalkeeper's outstretched hands.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon earned the victory 4-2.
Later in the week the Mustangs fell to West Delaware 2-1. After falling behind 2-0, Mount Vernon-Lisbon managed a goal late in the game off of Connett Croghan's foot to bring the Mustangs to within one goal. There just wasn't time to even the score, and Mount Vernon-Lisbon lost to the Hawks.
Monday the Mustangs faced undefeated Hudson, a top team in the state, and fell 4-2.
Although it was a loss for Mount Vernon, this was the second-best performance by any team against Hudson this season.
Coach Rodd said the Mustangs were left with some "if onlys, namely Logan Walker's power drive that narrowly curled away from the top left-hand corner of the Hudson goal, the non-call on a handball in their penalty area, and Jacob Muller's excellent quick free kick floated over the top of the Hudson back line that Connett Croghan just failed to reach."
Mount Vernon-Lisbon hosts DeWitt Central Friday. Tuesday they host Dyersville-Beckman.
