Lions win battle of the bat June 08, 2012 · Crystal Eskelsen
As the sun was setting on a gorgeous early June day, the baseball team from Mount Vernon and Lisbon took to the field for a fun, competitive ball game - the battle of the bat.
The Lions earned the 4-3 win Friday, edging the Mustangs in the final innings of the game.
Lisbon took a 4-2 lead over Mount Vernon in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ben Knake reached first after getting hit by a pitch and then Jordan Bahl was walked.
Marshall Morgan singled, scoring Knake and moving Bahl to second. Two batters later, Bahl scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Keegan Tritle, giving Lisbon the 4-2 lead.
The Lions are currently 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big East Conference. Lisbon is ranked No. 9 in Class 1A by the IHSBCA.
Lisbon had home runs this week from Morgan and Tritle. In other action this past week, the Lions topped Bellevue-Marquette, Anamosa and Springville.
The Lions play tonight (Thursday, June 7) at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids against HLV. Friday, they are at North Linn and Saturday they are at the Highland tournament. Monday, the Lions host Prince of Peace and Tuesday they host West Branch.
"Our goal needs to be to improve each day," said Ryan Stensland, Lisbon head coach.
