MV’s Whitley hits grand slam

The Mount Vernon softball team traveled to Solon last week to face the Class 3A, No. 1-ranked Spartans in a double header.
Mustang sophomore catcher Hannah Whitley took two balls in the fourth inning of the first game and then drove the ball over the fence for a two-run homerun.
Mount Vernon went on to loose that game 14-2.
In the nightcap, Whitley stepped to the plate in the fifth inning with the bases loaded following a walk, a fielders choice and a single by Hannah Wieditz. Mount Vernon was tied with Solon at 2-2.
The first pitch to Whitley was a strike. She connected with the second pitch and sent it sailing over the fence for a grand slam, scoring four Mustang runs and giving Mount Vernon the 6-2 lead over Solon.
It was short lived as the Spartans regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring seven runs and taking a 9-6 lead. At the end of seven innings, Solon earned the 10-6 win.
At the Jesup tournament over the weekend, the Mustangs finished fourth out of 16 teams. Mount Vernon beat Mediapolis and Sioux City East. Losses came to Class 3A, No. 7 Center Point-Urbana, Vinton-Shellsburg and Class 4A, No. 12 West Delaware.
The win over Sioux City East was the first varsity win for Mustang eight grade pitcher Lily Dahlstrom.
"We continue to improve," said Robin Brand, Mount Vernon head coach. "We are consistent at bat, but we need to work on not leaving runners on base."
The Mustangs play tonight (Thursday, June 14) at home against Western Dubuque. Friday and Saturday they are at the Roland Story tournament. Monday, Mount Vernon hosts Anamosa and Tuesday they are at Marion.
