
John G. ‘Jack’ Dunn July 06, 2012
John G. "Jack" Dunn, 85, a resident of Davenport, died Monday, June 25, 2012, at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park, Davenport, following an extended illness and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial were June 29, 2012, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church Davenport. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery. The family greeted family and friends Thursday, June 28, at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.
John Gardner Dunn was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Lisbon, a son of Samuel Stentz and Lucille (Gardner) Dunn. He graduated from Thorton Fractional Township High School, Calumet City, Ill., and attended Knox College, Galesburg, Ill.
John was proud to have served his country, and was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was delighted to have had the opportunity to be a guest on an Honor Flight in 2011 with his son, David.
Jack was united in marriage to Eileen Mary Casey on Dec. 24, 1945, in Crown Point, Ind. She was the daughter of John and Ruth Casey.
Jack was a meat cutter at L & M Royal Blue in Bettendorf, and Golick's Meat Market in Davenport, retiring in 1989 after 29 years. In his early retirement years he was a courier for Smith Kline Beecham.
He was a charter member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion. He assisted with the initial Assumption High School Building Drive, was vice-president of the West High Boosters Club, treasurer for the Cub Scouts, and a volunteer Little League coach.
Jack enjoyed traveling; he made a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, and made trips to both Ireland and Italy.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Eileen, and their children and spouses, Dr. John (Barbara McNeal) Dunn, Tallahassee, Fla., Maureen "Moe" Petet, Des Moines, Margaret "Maggie" (Michael) Shadrick, Summertown, Tenn., Daniel (Deb) Dunn, Bettendorf, David (Sharon Kendall-Dunn) Dunn, Bettendorf, and Joseph Dunn and his fiancee, Judy Baker, Davenport; 11 loving grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joyce Ann (Peter) Ruhl, St. Petersburg, Fla.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Colleen, in 2000; a son, Patrick Francis, in 2001; son-in-law, Tom Petet; a grandson and his wife, Shawn and Lucy Shadrick; grandson-in-law, Mark Ward; sister and a brother-in-law, Donna and Harold "Skeets" Ebbens; and a sister-in-law, Colleen Casey.
