The Mount Vernon baseball team finished out the regular season with a little flair, upsetting Class 2A, No. 5 Waterloo Columbus 4-3 in the opening game of a doubleheader with the Sailors last week.
Mustang pitcher Cal Kragenbrink earned the win on the mound, pitching four innings and giving up just two hits and one run.
Mount Vernon had the 4-1 lead after five innings before Waterloo Columbus put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning.
With the regular season in the books, Mount Vernon is focused on postseason district action and playing their best baseball in those games.
The Mustangs were scheduled to play the semifinals of Class 2A, District 7 Tuesday night at Monticello against Bellevue.
The district finals are Saturday at Monticello at 7 p.m. Class 2A substate is Tuesday, July 17, at Solon.
"We are ready to compete in the postseason," said Jeremy Elliott, Mount Vernon head coach.

RECAP: Class 2A No. 2 Dyersville Beckman scored two runs in each of the third, fifth and seventh innings to earn a 6-1 win over the Mustangs in the first game of a doubleheader July 2. Mount Vernon's run came from Trey Ryan in the sixth inning. The Mustangs had four hits in the game; Cal Kragenbrink led the team as he went 2-for-3.

RECAP: Mount Vernon jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning in the nightcap against Dyersville Beckman. Beckman matched those runs with three in the third inning and one in the fourth, then got seven more total runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Mustangs Spencer Drahos, Jake Timm and Luke Hansen all spent time on the mound. Jake Ryan went 2-for-3 at bat, with one RBI. Conner Welch and Jake Pisarik each had a double in the game.

Game One

RECAP: Conner Younggreen picked up the win in the first game of a home doubleheader against the Mustangs of Independence July 3. Independence had a seven-run third inning to take a 9-6 lead, but Mount Vernon held Independence to just one more run in the game. And the local Mustangs brought home seven runners in the sixth inning en route to the 15-10 win. Noah Dahlstrom was 3-for-4 at bat, with a double, RBI and two stolen bases. Conner Welch went 2-for-3. In addition to Dahlstrom, Cal Kragenbrink and Spencer Drahos each had doubles.
