Lions are ready to rumble
August 25, 2012 · Crystal Eskelsen

This year's Lions have some big shoes to fill. The Lisbon football team - Class A state champs last year - had a lot of talent graduate. There were 14 seniors on the roster last season. But there is a lot of new energy on Walmer Field this season as the 2012 Lions get ready to hit Class A football hard.

The Lions will be led by six seniors: Sean Dougherty, John Noll, Trevor Moore, Hunter Caspers, Alex Dean and Trey Kamberling. All six have varsity experience and will be leaders on and off the field for Lisbon.

Lisbon has been practicing hard for three weeks and are ready to hit the competition, instead of their teammates.

The Lions begin their season on the road at Class 2A, No. 6 West Branch.

Last season, Lisbon defeated the Bears 18-8 in what amounted to be one of the Lions' closest games of their perfect 14-0 season.

Lisbon is not included in the preseason rankings for Class A, but they are listed as a team to watch because the Lions always come to compete.

Class A district five is the Lions' home this season along with Class A, No. 4 Lone Tree. The Tigers were quarterfinalists last year, but lost to Lisbon, 20-7. They have 15 returning starters and a new head coach, Regan Jones.

Also in the district are Danville, Highland-Riverside, New London, Van Buren, WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union.
