Cole Corner: Delve into ‘Best Picture’ nominees at their source by digging into books
February 22, 2013
Are you getting ready for this year's Oscars by attending movies to see what all "the buzz" is about?
Well, this year you might also want to visit the library to get the whole story because six of the nine nominations for "Best Picture" are based on books.
Life of Pi is based on the book by Yann Martel with the same title. Additional movies and the books that inspired them are: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo; The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick; Argo: How the CIA and Hollywood Pulled Off the Most Audacious Rescue in History by Antonio Mendez and Matt Baglio.
The movie Lincoln is based on the book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Beasts of the Southern Wild is based on Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar.
So if people ask you if books are a dying breed, you can tell them, "I hope not, since they are inspiring the movie industry!"
