Harlan Everett Russell, 85, of Mechanicsville, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Mechanicsville Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Everett's funeral was set for Thursday, March 7, at 11 a.m., at the Mechanicsville First Presbyterian Church, by Rev. Bill Harnish. Everett's visitation was set for 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Morgan Funeral Choices, Mount Vernon. Everett will be buried at White Oak Cemetery, Greenfield Township, Jones County.
Surviving Everett is his wife, Dorothy; children, Robert (Eileen) Russell of Phoenixville, Penn., Beverly (David) Brandt of Council Bluffs, Lynn Everett Russell of Mechanicsville, and Marilyn (Stuart) Halley of Brownsville, Wis.; and five grandchildren, Julie and Michael Brandt, and Megan, Alayna and Ellyn Halley.
Preceding Everett in death were his parents, Harlan and Edith Grassfield Russell.
Everett was born Jan. 6, 1928, at Anamosa. He graduated from Morley High School 1945. Everett attended Coe College for two years and later graduated from Iowa State College in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in farm operations. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1951. Everett and Dorothy Moellering were joined in marriage July 5, 1952.
He was a member of Jones Soil District Commission for 12 years; a 4-H Club leader; served on Jones County Extension Council; was a Chancellor Commander of Knights of Pythias; was a member of Lion's Club; and served as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville.
He farmed all of his life on the family's Century Farm.
The fields and gardens in heaven will look much better now that Everett is there.
