March 29, 2013

Garrett Russikoff became the winningest men's tennis player in Cornell history, notching win No. 110 in a straight-set singles triumph Saturday against Morningside.

The senior from Stevenson Ranch, Calif., added two more victories later in the day against Wartburg, moving his career record to 112-83. Russikoff took down the previous wins mark set by Austin Reed (109-51) from 1999-02.

Russikoff stands 18-9 on the season, with an 11-3 record in singles play. He has fashioned a 54-44 career mark in singles, while going 58-39 in doubles competition.

Russikoff moved into an exclusive group of 110-match winners at Cornell, which includes eight women's players. Pavla Brachova tops that list with 148 wins.

Russikoff helped guide the Rams (10-2) to a 6-3 dual win over Morningside. Cornell was edged by Wartburg in the second dual, 5-4.

Russikoff reeled off his record-setting win against Morningside's Reid Rosen, 6-2 and 6-1, at No. 2 singles. The Rams also picked up singles wins from Justin Bradfield at No. 3, Joseph Gelfand at No. 4, Orion Wilkinson at No. 5 and Thomas Weiss at No. 6.

Cornell's Ashan DeSilva and Tyler Shonkwiler won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

The Rams took two of three doubles matches from Wartburg, including an 8-5 victory from Russikoff and Wilkinson at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. DeSilva and Weiss prevailed, 9-7, at No. 3.

Wartburg (9-5) won four of the singles bouts to take the dual. Russikoff beat Brian Rasmussen, 6-3 and 7-5. Wilkinson rolled 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5.

Coming up - Cornell opens a four-dual homestand April 4 against Central. The Rams host Midwest Conference foes Lawrence and Grinnell April 6, followed by a home date April 10 with Augustana.
