Lions take Big East
May 03, 2013 · Jake Krob

The Big East Conference dynasty continues for the Lisbon-Mount Vernon girls' golf team.

The Lions won the conference meet at Plum River in Preston Monday, combining for a 402 to outdistance runner-up Camanche by 19 strokes. This is the third straight Big East title for the program.

"I am so proud of what our girls have accomplished," said coach Matt Haddy. "We lost some really good players from last year's team, but the girls stepped up and have really improved throughout the year."

Emily Gasper and Brittany Frey led the team, tying for third place with 95s. Addie Caspers finished fifth with a 97. All three earned All-Conference honors with their finishes. Kaitlin Zieser contributed to the team score with a 115.

Haddy said Gasper and Frey, the team's two seniors, "have been great leaders for us and played great rounds. I couldn't be happier for them with the way that their careers have gone - three straight conference championships and going three straight years without losing a meet to a 1A or 2A opponent. I could really tell that winning the championship was really special to them."

Recent action also found the Lions earning titles at Wapsi Oaks and Meadowview. At Wapsi Oaks Thursday, April 25, the team edged out Camanche by a stroke. Gasper shot a 51 for medalist honors and Frey had a 52 for runner-up status. At Meadowview, the Lions dominated Central City and Edgewood-Colesburg. Frey and Gasper again led the way, shooting 49 and 51, respectively.

The Lions were to play at Midland Wednesday, May 1.

Regional golf is May 20, with Lisbon-Mount Vernon playing at the Pin Oak Golf Course in Manchester. Because of the combined program, the Lions compete in Class 4A.
