MV-L snatches Marion win
May 03, 2013 · Crystal Eskelsen
The Mount Vernon-Lisbon boys' soccer team earned a hard-fought win over Marion last week, 1-0.
Mustang Guillermo Vega was finally able to find the back of the net with his shot in the second half to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead and eventually the win by that same score.
Earlier in the week, Mount Vernon lost to Dyersville Beckman 5-0. After falling behind in the first half by a score of 3-0, not much changed in the second half as the Blazers continued to dominate.
"Beckman currently sits in the top of the standings in our conference and they surely proved why," said Diego Zaltron, MV-L head coach. "They displayed a great style of soccer and were lethal offensively."
The Mustangs also lost a close game last Friday when they hosted rival Solon. It was scoreless for most of the game, and then the Spartans scored late in the second half to take a 1-0 lead. That single goal was the difference in the game as Solon sneaked away with the 1-0 victory.
"We have many things to improve," Zaltron said. "We have many things to learn. We are hoping the weather gets better so we can practice outside. The kids are keeping the faith and keep working hard to turn a bad few games around."
The Mustangs host Western Dubuque tonight (Thursday, May, 2). This coming Tuesday they host Williamsburg.
