Competition leads to improvement for tennis team
May 03, 2013 · Jake Krob

Call it a race to the finish for the Mount Vernon tennis team.

With wet weather halting, delaying and rescheduling matches, the Mustangs had three opportunities for competition this past week.

"We're finally playing a lot," said coach Crystal Eskelsen.

The team fell 9-0 to Western Dubuque April 15, 6-3 to Maquoketa Thursday, April 25, and 6-3 to Cedar Rapids Jefferson this past Friday.

Although Western Dubuque is a top team in the WaMaC Conference, several Mustangs didn't let the Bobcats dominate. That included, Eskelsen pointed out, Isabella Logan and Maddy Marshall, who have minimal varsity experience.

Against Maquoketa, the Mustangs got wins from sophomore Kate Lynott and senior Hannah Ganzel in singles, and Ganzel and Katee Walters in doubles. Walters also had a close match in singles, falling 7-5 in a back-and-forth tie-breaker.

Wins against Jefferson came from Kathleen Bevans in singles, and in doubles from Ganzel/Walters and Mallory Scieszinski/Logan.

The Mustangs were to play in the WaMaC Conference tournament this past Tuesday (results weren't available at press time). Tonight (Thursday, May 2) they are at Western Dubuque.

The team regional opener is May 11 against Marion.
