No. 5 Lisbon battles with other top teams

The Class 1A, No. 5 Lisbon Lions were 3-2 this week, losing to Class 3A, No. 9 Davenport Assumption 9-8 and falling to previously ranked powerhouse Clear Creek-Amana 4-0.

The Lions earned wins over Tipton, Davenport North and Davenport Central, winning by an average of more than eight runs.

Lisbon took out Tipton in just three innings, shutting out the Tigers 12-0. The Lions scored one run in the first and nine runs in the second innings while holding Tipton scoreless.

Cassie Smith homered in the second, and Brittany Frey hit a strong double in the first to lead the Lion offense.

Against Davenport North, the Lions had a huge first inning, taking a 6-0 lead after one. North battled back, but Lisbon held onto the lead throughout the game and finished with the 10-7 win. Alexa Moothart hit a triple to lead Lisbon at the plate.

Finally, the Lions shut out Davenport Central 11-0. Lisbon had nine hits to Central's two on their way to five scoreless innings. The Lion defense was sharp.

The Lions play at Calamus-Wheatland today (Thursday, June 13). Friday and Saturday they are at Humboldt for a tournament. Monday they host Camanche in a doubleheader.

RECAP: Frey doubled in the first inning and earned one Lion RBI. In the second inning, Lisbon scored nine runs on four hits, including singles from Givens, Hendricks and Montgomery. The fourth Lion hit of the inning was a homer from Smith.

RECAP: Assumption is ranked No. 9 in Class 3A and came from behind to hand Lisbon the 9-8 loss. Lisbon led through five innings, but in the sixth Assumption managed to string together four back-to-back singles, scoring two runs and winning the game.
