MV edges Lions, 1-0
June 21, 2013 · Crystal Eskelsen

The Mount Vernon softball team's hard work has propelled them into the No. 12 spot in the Class 3A standings.

All of this despite the fact that the Mustangs have been playing some without four-year starter Miranda Chapman due to an injury.

"We pulled together quickly as a team and continued moving forward," said Robin Brand, Mount Vernon head coach.

The Mustangs edged out Class 1A, No. 8 Lisbon with a single run this week, 1-0.

In the bottom of the second inning Mount Vernon's Hannah Whitley reached base after being hit by a pitch.

Then Hannah Wieditz laid down a sacrifice bunt. Then the Lions overthrew to first and all the way into left field.

Whitley scored, and the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead.

Lisbon left runners on the base in each of the remaining innings except the sixth.

With the score still 1-0, the teams entered the seventh inning.

Lisbon started with a single from Cassie Smith and the Mount Vernon defense kicked in.

The Mustangs made three huge plays at home plate to get the final three outs of the game.

"It was a big win," said Brand. "Lisbon is a solid team. It was super to see our defense really step up."

Later in the week Mount Vernon split a doubleheader with Independence, winning one game 9-2 and losing the other game 9-4.

The Mustangs spent the weekend at the Roland-Story Tournament. They won a game against Gilbert, lost to Class 3A, No. 2 Mid-Prairie and had two other games rained out.

"We need to keep improving to get where we want to be in July," Brand said.

Mount Vernon is at Waterloo Columbus tonight (Thursday, June 20). Monday they are at Dyersville Beckman. Wednesday, June 26, the Mustangs host Benton Community.
