One files so far for seat on council
June 28, 2013
The deadline is Friday, July 5, to be on the ballot for the City of Mount Vernon's special election.
As of Monday, one person had filed paperwork to run.
Francesca Thompson filed last week to fill the council position vacated by Steve Maurice. The term runs until the end of 2015; Maurice resigned in early May.
Petition papers must be filed at City Hall by noon July 5 to be on the ballot for the July 30 election. People need at least 25 signatures from eligible electors in the city, and petition papers are available at City Hall.
Thompson has been a regular attendee of city council meetings since January 2011.
"I decided that I should start paying attention to what's going on in town," she said.
She hasn't sought an elected position before, but said now is the time to do so.
"It's my civic duty," she said.
Thompson grew up in Mount Vernon, then was gone for about 25 years as she and her husband were in the service. Thompson served in the Navy as a nurse. They moved back to Mount Vernon in 1998. She is retired and said she now has the time to serve her city.
