The Mount Vernon softball team split doubleheaders with both Waterloo Columbus and Maquoketa last week.
The Mustangs trounced Waterloo Columbus, 11-0, in the first game of the doubleheader, totaling 12 hits as a team.
In the fourth inning, Mount Vernon took control of the game, scoring six runs on seven singles from Michaela Martin, Libby Ryan, Miranda Chapman, Hannah Whitley, Courtney Maddocks, Annie See and Alexis Kroeger.
The second game between the two teams was a much closer contest, with the Sailors coming out victors, 7-6.
Waterloo Columbus totaled nine hits compared to Mount Vernon's six, and the Sailors scored two runs in the seventh inning to seal the win.
Against Maquoketa, the Mustangs lost another one-run game, 10-9. Despite a huge first inning with the Mustangs scoring five runs to start the game, Mount Vernon was unable to hold off the Cardinals.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mustangs scored the win, 5-3.
Mount Vernon scored three runs on four hits - singles by Chapman, See, Lily Dahlstrom and Martin - in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead.
Maquoketa attempted to come from behind in the seventh inning but only managed two runs before the Mustangs' defense snuffed out their efforts.
"We will continue to improve and work on playing as error-free ball as possible as we go into tournament play," said Mount Vernon coach Robin Brand, referring to regional play in July.
The Mustangs host the Gary Stamp Invitational Friday with teams from Jesup, North Cedar, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Washington, Iowa Vally, Columbus Junction and Mount Pleasant coming to compete. Monday the Mustangs host DeWitt Central and Tuesday they are at Class 1A, No. 15 Preston.
