No. 9 Lions beat pair of top teams
June 28, 2013 · Crystal Eskelsen

The Lisbon Lions' softball team is ranked No. 9 in Class 1A with a record of 15-8.

The Lions earned wins this week over Class 1A, No. 15 Preston, Class 2A, No. 7 AGWSR, South Hardin and South Tama. Lisbon lost a game to Preston and lost a game to Class 3A, No. 7 Bondurant-Farrar.

Lisbon split its doubleheader with No. 15 Preston, winning the first game after 11 innings of play.

The Lions took an early lead, going ahead 3-1 in the third inning with the help of hits off the bats of Cassidy Moore and Kelsi Griffiths.

The Trojans battled back at a rate of one run per inning, and by the sixth inning the score was tied at 3-3.

The next four innings were scoreless for both teams. Lisbon had two hits in those four innings - a single by Paige Felderman in the ninth inning and a single from Zeva Light in the 10th.

In the top of the 11th inning Griffiths reached base on a single and Felderman hit a sacrifice bunt, moving the Lisbon runner to second. Then Cassie Smith doubled to left center field and the Lions scored one run, but they weren't done yet. Two batters later, Brittany Frey singled to right field, scoring another Lion run to give Lisbon the 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the 11th, the Lisbon defense did their job perfectly. Lion pitcher Ali Givens forced the batters into ground ball hits and all three Preston hitters were thrown out at first base to end the game.

The second game against Preston was reversed, with the Trojans earning the two-run win, 7-5.

Lisbon also defeated ranked AGWSR at the Marshalltown tournament over the weekend. The Lions scored in the first inning and again in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. AGWSR scored one run in the fifth, but Lisbon pitcher Givens gave up just three hits to this ranked team.

Today (Thursday, June 27), the Lions host Class 3A, No. 13 Northeast in doubleheader. This weekend they are at the Iowa City West tournament. Monday, Lisbon is at Western Dubuque and Tuesday they are at West Branch.
