Young Mustang pitchers performing well

The Mount Vernon baseball team lost a pair of close ball games to Class 3A, No. 6 Benton Community last week and won a game against Mid-Prairie.
The Mustangs pitched Keanan Shannon against Mid-Prairie and he went four innings, striking out two batters and walking just one.
"He pitched very effectively for us," said Jeremy Elliott, Mount Vernon head coach. "Sam Moore came in to a tight spot in the fifth and didn't surrender a run."
Moore pitched the final three innings of the game and didn't give up a single hit while striking out five.
Mount Vernon's Luke Eldred had two doubles in the game, with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. Trey Ryan was 2-for-3 at the plate including a double.
The Mustangs hosted the ranked Bobcats in a doubleheader last week and managed to keep the games close, but couldn't quite get the win.
Mount Vernon pitched freshmen in both games, Marquis Dew in game one and Adam Ketelsen in game two.
"Our freshmen pitchers pitched well enough to win the games," Elliott said. "But we are realizing it takes a total team effort."
The Mustangs lost game one 6-2, giving up 10 hits to Benton Community. In the second game, the Bobcats narrowly escaped with a 3-1 win.
Mount Vernon hosts Waterloo Columbus Friday. Monday they host DeWitt Central and Tuesday the Mustangs are at Class 2A, No. 7 Iowa City Regina.
