Alumni association names 2013 hall of fame honorees

The Mount Vernon Community School District Alumni Association has announced that the following alums have been selected as 2013 Alumni Hall of Fame winners:

  • Achievement: Darla Stoltz Templeton, Class of 1964

• Fine Arts: William "Bill" Pringle, Class of 1972

• Service: Richard "Dick" McKeen, Class of 1951

• MVCSD Community Impact: Karen Jilovec Martin, Class of 1957

• Athletics: Dennis Wolrab, Class of 1964

The alumni association will present the awards during Homecoming weekend, on Friday, Oct. 4.

Alumni association board vice president and award committee chair Dennis Jordan (Class of 1987) says: "We feel these five awards (Achievement, Service, Community Impact, Fine Arts, Athletics) both enhance the homecoming tradition and recognize Mount Vernon alums as role models and examples for our current students."

City seeks volunteers

The City of Mount Vernon has openings on volunteer boards.

There is one opening each on the fire department advisory board and planning and zoning commission.

Interest forms can be picked up at City Hall.

Voting opens for local

school board elections

Early voting by absentee ballot has begun in Linn County for the regular school board elections. People may vote in-person at the Election Services Department of the Auditor's Office in the Linn County Public Service Center, 935 2nd St. S.W., Cedar Rapids. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

  In addition to casting an in-person absentee ballot, voters can an absentee ballot by mail. Absentee ballot request forms can be downloaded from the Election Services Department website, www.LinnCountyElections.org/ now. Requesters may also call (892-5300) or email (elections@LinnCounty. org) the office to have a form sent to them. Sept. 6 is the last day to request an absentee ballot by mail.

Polls for the school board elections are open Sept. 10.
