FSCC site of summer celebration of gospel
August 23, 2013 · Dave Morris

A Summer Celebration of Gospel Music will be presented Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Uptown Theatre of the First Street Community Center.

The family-friendly concert features Cymaron Dawson and the 20-member OnePraise group of the Living Waters Kingdom Church in Cedar Rapids. Damon Cole of Mount Vernon will also be featured, said Lisa Dawson, a member of the group.

"It should be a very exciting event," Dawson said. The event is free to all, and a free-will offering will be accepted at each performance to benefit the church. "It's an opportunity to celebrate with the community."

The event has been months in planning, but took a turn with the recent death of 29-year-old Winfred Davis in a fall from the Memorial Park water tower, where he was working.

"This is dedicated to the family and the young man who died," Dawson said. "This has a message of hope and healing. Everyone is welcome and can take part. We're looking forward to a wonderful praise time."

Dawson is a longtime friend of Trude Elliott, who with her husband, Rick, developed the former Mount Vernon school building and turned it into a diverse community space.

For six years, Living Waters Kingdom Church, located at 1200 Second Ave. S.E. in Cedar Rapids, has served people in the area with free meals, a clothes closet, mentoring for youth and assisting families with back-to-school support. The OnePraise group is another way for the church to reach out, Dawson explained. Pastor Cymaron Dawson is Lisa Dawson's son.

"We are often asked to go out and sing. We enjoy ministering and singing," Lisa Dawson said.

She noted Pastor Dawson's link with the Mount Vernon community.

"He is a very musically gifted person," she said. "He attended Cornell College. We've always enjoyed the Mount Vernon community."

The church's website includes this background about Pastor Dawson:

"Pastor Dawson is a very sought after musician, producer, songwriter, and workshop clinician. He has toured and performed in and out of the country with many top name Gospel recording artists, such as, Ricky Dillard and New G, Vashawn Mitchell, Darnell Davis and The Remnant, Maurette Brown-Clark, Yolanda Adams and countless others.

"Pastor Dawson has also served as musical director, Minister of Music, or staff and traveling musician for many prolific and influential pastors, bishops, and evangelists, including Bishop Darrell Hines and Bishop Johnathon Alvarado. He is an adjunct professor and Musical Director of the Voices of Soul Gospel Choir at the University of Iowa. He is also the CEO of Living Waters Music Group, an emerging Gospel music production and artist development company.

"Pastor Dawson has done extensive work in the Greater Cedar Rapids Community School District with young people, in music and mentoring capacities. He developed the Generation Now Youth Movement, which is a mentoring and youth development and empowerment program. He is also a part of various advisory committees and boards in the community, as well as a board member of the statewide Council of Apostles."
