October 11, 2013 · Crystal Eskelsen

Both Mount Vernon-Lisbon cross country teams are included in the Class 3A rankings at the final week of the regular season approaches.

The Mustang girls are ranked No. 7, with junior Kendra Schmidt currently ranked No. 17 in 3A.

The Mount Vernon-Lisbon boys are ranked No. 11 in Class 3A and continue to run well as a pack.

The Mount Vernon-Lisbon girls finished sixth at the Iowa City West Invitational Tuesday, Oct. 1, with a team score of 143. Class 4A, No. 4 Cedar Rapids Kennedy won the meet with 57.

The competition at the West Invite is always tough and this year was no different. The teams that finished ahead of the Mustangs included Kennedy, Class 3A, No. 1 Davenport Assumption, Class 4A, No. 7 Iowa City West, Class 4A, No. 9 Muscatine and Class 4A, No. 15 Bettendorf.

Mount Vernon-Lisbon edged out ranked teams from Cedar Rapids Xavier (Class 3A, No. 8), Regina (Class 2A, No. 6), and Pekin (Class 1A, No. 2).

The Mustangs were led by Schmidt, who finished 12th with a time of 15:37.36.

"Kendra keeps improving every meet," said Sue Deibner, Mount Vernon-Lisbon coach. "Immediately following the race she barely looks winded. I love it."

The Mustang boys were eighth at Iowa City West with 214 points. Class 4A, No. 2 Cedar Rapids Prairie won the meet with 46.

The boys' side of the West Invitational also includes several top teams - the champions Cedar Rapids Prairie and Iowa City West (Class 4A, No. 9), Cedar Rapids Xavier (3A, No. 5), and Iowa City Regina (2A, No. 11).

Mount Vernon-Lisbon was led by Reid Smock, who finished 35th with a time of 17:55.29. Less than a minute later the Mustangs' fifth runner, Nolan Teubel, crossed the finish line, putting all of their scoring runners within a minute of each other.

"Our pack running has really been the key to our success thus far," said Kory Swart, Mount Vernon-Lisbon coach. "When one of the boys doesn't have their best race, another runner has stepped up, which has been great."

The Mustangs have a week off of competition to prepare for the WaMaC Conference meet at Center Point-Urbana on Thursday, Oct. 17.
