Mt. Vernon police arrest man facing felony charges
January 17, 2014

A man facing felony charges in Johnson County was arrested in Mount Vernon last week following a custody dispute call.

Luis Alejandro Contreras, 31, was arrested and transported to Johnson County by deputies Wednesday night, Jan. 8.

Mount Vernon police chief Mark Winder reports that Mount Vernon police were called to 1225 1st Ave. N.W., Lot 73, at 7:24 p.m. for a child custody dispute between a man and woman. Two Mount Vernon officers and one from Lisbon responded.

Officers identified the man as Contreras, and discovered he had three warrants for his arrest from Johnson County - two for sexual abuse, classified as felonies, and one for OWI.

Winder reported that Contreras complained of a medical issue, so Lisbon-Mount Vernon Ambulance responded as well. Contreras refused treatment, but was transported by police to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids for an evaluation. After that, he was turned over to Johnson County officials.
