James H. Shutt

James H. Shutt, 87, of 139 Elderberry Place, Lancaster, Pa., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at his residence.

Born in Mediapolis, he was the son of the late Emerson and Mary F. Friedamann Shutt and the husband of the late Phyllis Jean Vandermark Shutt, who died in November 2011. James was a devoted husband and father, and was married for 62 years to his beloved wife, Jean.

James graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy. After graduation, James and Jean operated Shutt's Pharmacy in Mount Vernon.

While in Iowa, he was a member of the Mediapolis Presbyterian Church. He also enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, golf, and loved his farm in Iowa. He was a devoted fan of the football and basketball programs at the University of Iowa - "Go Hawks." James served as a corporal in the United State Marine Corps during WW II in the Pacific Theatre.

He attended First United Methodist Church of Lancaster. His memberships included Free & Accepted Masons and Shriners for more than 50 years and several bridge clubs at Woodcrest Villa.

Surviving are a son, Craig A., husband of Cynthia "Dusty" Shutt, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son-in law, Gary A. Reynolds, of Lancaster, husband of the late Anne Elizabeth Shutt Reynolds; a granddaughter, Nickole L. Nafziger, wife of Jeremy, of Millersville, Pa.; a grandson, Joshua G. Reynolds, of Millersville; and two great-grandchildren, Isiac H. and Mackenzi J. Nafziger, both of Millersville, Pa.

James' life celebration funeral service at the Funeral Home of Fred F. Groff in Lancaster was Friday, Feb. 7, with the Rev. William Lentz, Jr., officiating. Interment was in Mellinger's Mennonite Cemetery.
