The 27th Annual Heritage Days Festival, Mount Vernon's biggest summer festival, will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 10, 11 and 12, in and around Uptown Mount Vernon.
With a parade theme of "80s Teen Movies," this year's festivities will include fireworks, a mini carnival, new attractions including a Ferris Wheel, as well as live music, bingo, a beer tent and a parade.
The festivities begin Thursday, July 10, at 6 p.m. (registration begins at 5:30 p.m.), at the Kernoustie Country Club, 203 Country Club Drive, Mount Vernon, with a "mini-Olympics for kids" sponsored by the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Rotary Club. It will be followed by food and family activities at Kernoustie, with the annual Fireworks Display at dark.
A mini-carnival will be set up on First Street East, and will include a Zipline, Eurobungy, inflatables, children's games, the Ferris Wheel and more. The rides will be open Friday, July 11, from 4 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, July 12, from noon to 10 p.m. The Mount Vernon/Lisbon Young Adult Theatre will be presenting "Pippin" in the First Presbyterian Church basement, (301 First St. NW). Shows will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The Main Street Stage on Mount Vernon's First Street West will feature live entertainment on both Friday and Saturday. See Simpleton and the City Folk at 6 p.m. and Large Midgets Friday, July 11, at 9 p.m.; and 3 Musicians and a Drummer Saturday, July 12, at 9 p.m. Food vendors will be set up Friday and Saturday, July 11 and 12, on First Street West.
The Heritage Days Parade will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12. With a theme of "80s Teen Movies," the parade's Line-up begins around 10 a.m. at the Small Multi-Sport Center parking lot. This year's parade will feature four junior grand marshalls, community children who won the opportunity to ride on the big fire engine through a random spin of a carnival wheel.
"Discover Your Heritage" is back again this year. This free event is a family heritage discovery search where volunteers will assist anyone interested in finding individual family histories (nationally and internationally) through tools already provided on the Internet. "Discover Your Heritage" is open to any resident or visitor, and will take place at the Mount Vernon Visitor Center, 311 First Street NW, Saturday, July 12, from noon to 4 p.m.
"We continue to up our game every year with Heritage Days," says Wade Squiers, Chair of the Heritage Days Committee. "We have worked hard this year to attain some quality attractions including a Ferris Wheel to ensure a good time for kids of all ages. We invite everyone in the area to dress up in their favorite '80s attire and come out to our parade on Saturday to discover what Mount Vernon has to offer."
