Rasmussens purchase storage business
July 21, 2010
Lisbon's newest business - Winningoal Mini-Storage - was officially welcomed to the community last week by the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group (CDG).
Russ and Deb Rasmussen took over the business at the end of May, purchasing the former Brown's Mini-Storage from Bob Brown. Russ said they were longtime tenants of Brown's, using it for storage. He said he and his wife had a goal of operating a business in Lisbon, and decided this was a good fit after seeing a newspaper ad about its sale.
The Rasmussens are 16-year residents of Lisbon whose boys (Tyler and Trenton, now in college) both graduated from Lisbon High School. They've been deeply involved in the community, as Russ served on the city council and Deb for the Booster Club.
"We love the community," Russ said. "We're excited to be one of the business owners now."
Russ works at Rockwell Collins, and Deb is a dental assistant. In 2005, Russ earned an MBA from the University of Iowa and the couple put together a business plan for a sports device. The plan finished in the top third in a contest through the University of Iowa's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, for manufacturing of a sports device. They set up an LLC, Winningoal, so they decided to use that name for the storage unit business.
The units opened for business in 1996, and some of the first tenants still rent space there. The facility features 68 10x25 units, 12 that are 10x10, and six that are 10x30.
The Rasmussens like the fact that Winningoal Mini-Storage is conveniently located on Hwy. 30, has paved drives and has been well-maintained over the years. They've set up an extensive website - www.winningoal.com - for the business. There, people can check on unit availability and see pricing information. Tenants can also use the website to pay their monthly bills via PayPal, credit card or debit card.
