Lisbon baseball gets off to a 4-2 season start May 31, 2006 · Crystal Eskelsen
The Lisbon baseball team celebrated Memorial Day with a trip to Lone Tree for a game.
A road trip that was only going to take a small portion of their holiday, ended up taking a little bit more as the bus time got moved up because Lone Tree doesn't have lights on their field.
Lisbon got off the bus and got off to a slow start against Lone Tree.
Lone Tree scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the bottom of the second, while holding Lisbon scoreless.
After working out the glitches from the first two innings, the Lions came alive in the top of the third.
It all started with a solid single hit off the bat of Lisbon senior Brandon Pleasant. Then Ahren Schultz hit a single and moved Pleasant around to third.
Gabe Parker was the next Lisbon batter and he got walked, loading the bases with Lions.
Lisbon's Eric Benyshek stepped to the plate with the possibility of several RBIs, he got one. Benyshek got hit by a pitch and Pleasant scored.
Eventually, Schultz and Parker would score in the third before Lone Tree managed three outs.
At this point Lisbon still trailed 6-3.
Lisbon held Lone Tree scoreless in the bottom of the third behind the pitching of Zach Butteris.
In the top of the fourth Lisbon added five more runs on four hits, including a double from Ethan Kamerling, a triple off the bat of Dustin McAfee and a triple from Butteris.
Benyshek got hit by another pitch in the fourth inning.
This gave Lisbon the 8-6 lead over Lone Tree.
Two innings later, Lisbon held onto a 10-9 lead over Lone Tree.
The Lions had to play a solid top of the seventh so that Lone Tree would not have much of a chance in the bottom of the seventh and they did just that.
Lisbon's Ethan Kamerling stepped to the plate as the Lions' lead off batter and nailed a home run off the first pitch.
Five runs later, the Lions had a 15-9 lead with just three outs to go.
Lone Tree scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh before Lisbon got that third out.
The Lions are led this season by five seniors and 14 returning letter winners.
Lisbon was to play at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids Wednesday evening, May 31, against Mount Vernon, and at Central City on Friday.
The Lions host a tournament Saturday with Central City, Northeast and Springville.
