Kintzel's team earns national championship

Courtney Kintzel has added a national title to her list of volleyball accolades.

Kintzel graduated from Mount Vernon High School this past May and will play for the University of Northern Iowa this fall.

She and her Six Pack club team took the title in the 2011 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in  Georgia this summer. They competed in the 18 National division.

The Six Pack earned the championship with a 2-1 (25-18, 21-25, 15-9) victory over the Surf City team from California. To get to the finals, Kintzel and her teammates topped Imi Ike 18s 2-1 (23-25, 25-17, 15-5). The team plowed through the tournament with just one loss in pool play.

Kintzel also earned high honors by being named to the all-tournament team for the 18 National Gold Division. Just 15 athletes were honored.

Melchert, Rockets team goes 8-2 at nationals

Morgan Melchert, the daughter of Patrick and Denise Melchert and a Mount Vernon High Schooler, recently competed at the Junior National Volleyball Championships held at the Georgia World Congress Center next to Olympic Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta. In order to compete at nationals, teams had to earn a bid by winning a state regional or a national qualifier tournament.

Melchert's team, Iowa Rockets 14R, finished third overall in the National Division made up of 48 teams from all over the country. They defeated teams from California, Utah, Florida, Wisconsin and Missouri in pool play, finishing 6-0. They went on to defeat St. Louis CYC and then dropped their first match of the tournament to Northern Lights of Minneapolis.

Next, they made quick work of The Royal Tigers, advancing to the gold bracket on Championship Tuesday. The team played a tough first match, defeating a previously undefeated Niagara Frontier team 2-0 to advance to the semifinals, where they lost a tight match to Coast 14 Luis out of Southern California 25-19 and 29-27. They finished the tournament 8-2.

Whitley, Rockets squad second at nationals

Hannah Whitley, who will be a sophomore at Mount Vernon High School, competed in the 2011 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships with the Iowa Rockets 15R team this summer.

The group took runner up in the Gold Division of tourney play, held at the Georgia World Congress Center next to Olympic Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta.

In the Gold Bracket, Whitley and her teammates topped the Miami Elite 15 Blue 2-0 (25-20, 26-24) in the quarterfinals. In the semis, the Rockets topped Omaha's River City Juniors 2-0 (25-14, 25-22).

That put the Rockets squad up against Sky 15 Magic, an Arizona team. The Rockets fell 2-1 in the championship.
