In its third trip to state in as many years, Mount Vernon's softball team was focused on having the Kekoa (Hawaiian for warrior) attitude from the first pitch. The Mustangs arrived at the fields in Fort Dodge Tuesday ready to battle.

Editor's note: Arguably the state's biggest sporting event starts Sunday when thousands of cyclists hit the roads of northern Iowa for RAGBRAI XLV. The great bike ride has gone through Lisbon and Mount Vernon a few times. The first, in 1978, RAGBRAI VI stayed overnight on the Cornell College campus. The Sun story by Bob Campagna reported 6,000 riders taking part. The final paragraphs of his account are reprinted below, along with "Impressions" column by Sara Gaarde and a letter to the editor by Addison Ault. The day that RAGBRAI came to town Mount Vernon Mayor Dick Peters, when asked for a philosophical interpretation of RAGBRAI's visit to Mount Vernon, said "what it means is that everyone is having a good time, and the business community is enjoying it."

Derek Bova, Jack Butteris and Blake Langhurst, all 2017 Lisbon grads and standouts for the Lions' state championship teams, have been running in USAT&F meets this summer, improving with each time on the track and working to qualify for nationals.

The Mount Vernon Mustangs 13U baseball team was runner up in the USSSA State Single A tournament. The 34-team tourney was played in Cedar Rapids July 7-9.

Wirfs, Ryan named top athletes

Libby Ryan and Tristan Wirfs, 2017 Mount Vernon grads, were named the Gazette newspaper's athletes of the year. It's the first time in the history of the honor that two athletes from the same school were recognized.
