Mount Vernon's volleyball team tackled top-ranked West Liberty in the semifinals of the state volleyball tournament Thursday in Cedar Rapids. The Comets won 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 22-13) and will play Nevada in the Class 3A finals Friday.

Mustangs win first-round match

Mount Vernon rallied past WaMaC foe Center Point-Urbana in the first round of the Class 3A state volleyball tournament in Cedar Rapids Wednesday, Nov. 11. The Mustangs captured the match 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22). Mount Vernon gets top-ranked West Liberty Thursday at 2 p.m.

Mustangs make it to 2A final four

In a Class 2A quarterfinals battle in Anamosa Friday night, the Mustangs earned a 33-20 victory to advance to the semifinals. The win avenged a 3-point loss to the Raiders earlier this season that gave Anamosa the district title. The Mustangs take on Albia Saturday night at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls. Albia advanced with a 17-6 win over South Tama last Friday night. The other semifinal features North Fayette vs. Spirit Lake.
