The first day of school was Tuesday, Aug. 23, with an early out at both schools. It was also the first day of class for teachers, many of whom are new to the district. School bond: Roughly $6 million for Performing Arts Center

LECC plans changes to payment system

Lisbon Early Childhood Center will be requiring parents to participate in an automatic withdrawal payment system and changing the cost to hold a spot in the daycare over the summer months effective Sept. 1.

Mt. Vernon city council meeting moved to Sept. 7

The Mount Vernon City Council's first meeting in September will be Wednesday, Sept. 7. The city council rescheduled it from its normal first Monday of the month because the first Monday in September is Labor Day.

New students arrive soon

Most members of Cornell College Class of 2020 will arrive on campus Wednesday, Aug. 31. Move-in is 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Quilters' work on display at History Center

Lisbon History Center has a new installation that went in this past week. The display features the work of Sew and Blow, a group of friends and quilters who have met regularly for more than 30 years for needlework and conversation.

Council tables social host ordinance

Mount Vernon city council members voted unanimously (4-0, with council member Paul Tuerler absent) Aug. 15 to table the second reading of the proposed social host ordinance for the city. They want to examine other options for preventing underage drinking and illicit substance abuse at parties.

A-Team ride planned to benefit injured Craig

A benefit fundraiser for Mount Vernon High School graduate Adam Craig will be held Saturday, Aug. 27. Craig suffered a spinal injury in a diving accident July 3.

The Mount Vernon School District auditorium has now been completely inventoried and an auditorium protocol checklist has been created to follow when anyone wants to use it. Recommendations have also been made for upgrading auditorium facilities and training.
