Happel, Wirfs champs at State tourney

The Lions won the traditional and dual team championships. Below: Mount Vernon’s Tristan Wirfs edged Atlantic’s John McConkey 3-2 for the Class 2A heavyweight state championships. Six Mustangs wrestled in the state tourney, with Wirfs, Paul Ryan and Sam Moore making the medals stand.

A strong season came to an end Saturday as the Mount Vernon girls' basketball team fell to fourth-ranked Crestwood in the Class 3A, Region 5 finals.

In the final regular-season archery tournament, Mount Vernon played host and champion Saturday. All three teams earned first place trophies, as did the 3D team. In total, 25 individual archers won awards and 18 archers shot their personal best.
