Editor's note: As volleyball heads to the postseason, it seemed a good time to return to some of the dominating Mount Vernon High School teams coached by Shirley Ryan in the 1980s and 90s. Certainly one of the most dominant was the 1984 squad, which won the Class 1A championship in Mount Vernon's first trip to state. The Mustangs did not lose a game in its 10 postseason matches - including three at the state tournament, held at Lincoln High School in Des Moines. Jeff Dahn, who joined the Sun staff in the fall of 1984, wrote the following account of the win.
